The Many Faces of Addiction

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

I believe many people have a picture painted in their mind what an addict must look like on the outside. People have this picture painted in their head of someone who looks homeless, or just has an unkept appearance. Most people would probably say it is really easy to tell that someone is battling drug addiction.

This really couldn't be farther from the truth. About fifteen years ago, I was in a hotel room with someone I grew up with, and I was a witness to them selling crack to a heart surgeon. It was at that moment that I myself realized what is said is so true, addiction knows no boundaries. Addiction is not just something people in poverty struggle with, its not something that only affects those that may struggle with mental health, it does not pick and choose who it clings too.

Some would be surprised to know how many drugs are actually transported and distributed by semi truck drivers, the very same people who are making sure our food and other products are delivered to the stores we shop. Addiction does not know the difference between someone who lives in a million dollar home from someone that lives in a tent. I have ran a business being an addict and I have been homeless being an addict. Addiction is not as black and white as most people think.
